Best Moon phase to hunt in...
As Chuck Adams says - "during a bright moon, hunting is better in the evening,
and during a dark moon, hunting is better in the morning."

Difference between ATA (AMMO) and IBO Bow speeds?
(fps is feet per second (gpi is grains per inch)
Parents: Is Archery good for your child?
Depending on your source, Archery is the safest, or second safest
sport/activity in the world. Safer than basketball, golf, volleyball or
badminton.
I would ask you to read the following 'article'.
ATA (AMMO) uses the following: A 540 grain arrow, or 9 grains of arrow weight per pound of bow arrow weight.
60 lbs of bow draw weight and a 30 inch draw length.
IBO uses the following: A 350 grain arrow, or 5 grains of arrow weight per pound of bow draw weight. 70 lbs of
bow draw weight and a 30 inch draw. Here you are asking your bow to be as powerful as it can be and for the
arrow to be as weak as it can be; this is a dangerous situation!!!
KAM Average: I like to use this method as it is more accurate to what the shooter will see. Set the bow to a 28 inch
draw length w/an arrow weighing 400 grains and the bow weight set to 63 lbs.
I DO NOT recommend 70 lbs of draw weight, nor 5 gpi arrows per the IBO method. Almost all companies use the
IBO method to show you how fast the bow is, this works as a great selling point if you do not know any better.
Neither the ATA, nor the IBO are realistic measure of true speeds for the individual.
What is my draw length?
Shooting Fingers or with a Release aid, finding your correct draw
length always takes a little work. Very seldom, alright, almost never
does a bow fit right straight out of the box. You may have to change
modules, adjust the strings or cables (although very little); or the
release itself. Also, don't expect your buddies bow to fit, even if you
are around the same build. This is due to a triangular relationship
from your eyes to the target back to your nocking point. You'll still
need some adjustment.
Find a Pro Shop you can trust, or ask your buddies to recommend
one. They will have a method or two they use to get you set-up right.
See far right side of this page for further info...
Paper tuning - Form tuning?
Paper Tuning is the shooting of an arrow through a taught piece of
paper, looking for a 'perfect' hole with three fletch tears; while...
Form Tuning is adjusting your form for better shooting and better
arrow flight.
Overall Tuning allows for much better arrow accuracy and better K.E.
Although most Pro Shops will have you do so at around 2 or 3 feet, I
have found it is better to have you back to around 8+ yards. Since
form is unique to the individual, NO ONE should shoot your bow
during the tuning process but YOU! You are looking for a straight
hole with three fletch tears, or a very slight high tear. Although a few
can fine-tune by eye, it is still better to start with a laser tune, then
paper tune, form tune then paper tune again.
Always keep in mind, at times you may want to consider the option of
equipment tuning.
Picky, I know!
Let's start with the important questions.
Your son or daughter tells you they will be using a crossbow to hunt this year; do you want them to hunt during
rifle season, muzzle loader season, shotgun season or archery season? And yes, a lot of folks stop hunting
because of the dangers of the first 3 seasons. I've even had one guy in Bowhunter Ed. class with two holes in him,
one from Muzzle loader season and one from Shotgun.
It is "loaded" and held ready to fire.
How different is this from sitting in a ground blind or tree stand with an arrow nocked, sitting or hanging ready to
shoot? The only difference is you have to draw the bow, usually with a mechanical aid; True, you are holding it
back with your own strength.
Requires no physical exertion than physically pulling the trigger to fire.
Mechanical release anyone? Allowing the string to release the arrow; Longbow, Recurve or Compound anyone?
Also, Keep in mind you do still have to pull the string back to lock it into place.
It bares no resemblance to a Bow, by definition, by method of operation or by appearance.
I think they have forgotten about the feathers. shaft, nocks, points and broadheads, cams or bare limbs, strings
and sight. A basic definition is also... If it uses a string, it's a bow... if it uses powder, it's a different beast
altogether. The stock and 'forearm/arrow rest' are the only "appearance". Keep in mind... unless your
handicapped, you have to pull the string to 'full draw', hold it in place with a mechanical device (although it's not
being held back continually by your own hand; you pull the trigger releasing the string to push the arrow forward,
the arrow then hitting the animal with a broadhead attached or a field point to the target.
The crossbow can use an attached sling for ease of carry.
What about the slings made to go over the limbs of Longbows, Recurves & Compounds?
It will decimate the heard.
This is the same argument used by Traditionalist against the Compound Bow. It has been proven that this has NOT
and WILL not happen.
It will be the poachers tool of choice.
So poachers won't us it until AFTER it becomes legal? Poachers are not hunters, they will use whatever is more
convenient. Maybe a 25 to 30 inch compound, which is easier to hide than a bulky crossbow, but poachers like to
shoot from an open window. This may be true some of the time, but how many deer have you seen hang by the side
of the road when a vehicle is approaching, let alone stopping close by; while still giving you a broad-side shot?
And here we thought that only groups like PETA or HSUS gave out lies & false information. I'm not trying to tell you
which side to be on, but I do feel we should at least look at them honestly, without letting it divide us. We must not
let the gods of archery, like the Pope and Young club, tell us what is right or wrong. Should having an animal in the
record books really be that important? REALLY? Besides, whats more 'valuable', the Buck standing at the edge of
the woods, or the female lead Doe he sent in to check for danger? His knowing full well that if there is danger
nearby, she will find it before he does.
Looking at the issue without emotion seems to be what a lot of folks just don't want to do. Looking at the issue
without making false accusations seems to not be the norm on this issue, you would have thought we would have
learned something from PETA and the HSUS.
Just be thankful you don't belong to the North Carolina Bowhunter's Association; the last time I checked their
statement on their web page (2010), you could disagree with them on this issue in thought, but you CAN NOT voice
that opposition in public or in a private conversation or you will be kicked out of the Association. Talk about
controlling the freedom of speech. WOW! ("Members may not endorse such a weapon under any circumstances "
and "or by talking to a group of people. or individuals, in public or casual conversation." Unbelievable!!!
This is truly sadening because of this state on their website (2.11.12)... "The Threat"
I quote - "Division between hunting communities: Hunters and fishermen have become fragmented into many
splinter groups over the years. As a result, they have lost, to a great extent, the power that comes from unity..."
NOTE: There is now a 'rifle' that will shoot an arrow using a 'dummy' cartridge. Sorry, even I have to draw the line
somewhere!!!!

Sharpening a fixed blade broadhead.
1. If any of the blades are "dinged", use a carbine sharpener
to smooth them out, however; run each blade thru the same
number of times for equal balance (using moderate pressure).
2. Use a black marker to cover the blade edge.
3. Use a 600 grit stone, moving the blades laterally until the
ink is removed. This may take several strokes, and again,
use the same number of strokes on all sides.
4. Now use a 1200 grit stone about 5 times or so to polish the
edges.
5. Blades should easily cut thru a taught rubber band without
much effort.
6.Remember, this is not the only way...

Vanes or Feathers.
Let's take a look at some of the things we hear.
Plastic vanes are more durable than feathers, they last longer.
This is just not true. Are feathers durable enough to handle the
riggers of the field or a 3D tournament? YOU BET! But let's get back
to durability in a minute.
Vanes are faster than feathers.
The "same (size & shape)" feather is faster out to 41 yards (about 5
fps), and equal to its counter part out to 61 yards.
A Feathers disadvantage.
It's been said that feathers cost more than vanes, but not much more.
This example comes from 2011 Major Archery catalog, 100 4 inch
plastic Bohning Archery Killer vanes costing $12.99, that's 0.1299 per.
While 50 4 inch Gateway Feathers run $21.99, that's 0.4398 per. By
my math, that's almost 3 1/2 X's the cost for half the feathers. To most
folks I know, that's a lot more than "not much". That being said, I
think once you look at the benefits, I think you'll agree they are
definitely worth the extra cost for look, durability and ability.
It's been said that feathers don't work well when wet.
It's true wet feathers will mat in time when it's raining, however, with
the use of Fletch-Dry and Aqua Net Hairspray to help protect my
feathers, yeah they'll still mat, but it saves them for awhile. I've shot
my feathers in the mist, the rain and a complete thunderstorm, I got
busted in the middle of a 3D tournament with almost no place to hide
so we just finished the course. Hitting the bullseye at 25 yards, the
problem gets to be seeing through the peep site; but with some
steam and fatherly love they'll shoot just fine. Below is a photo of,
the top one, of what my feathers looked like a few days after the 3D
shoot.
Now let's get back to the question of durability. It's also been
mentioned, "Speaking of tearing; spot and stalk hunters who use
feathers always have problems with brush, stick, limbs and other
"gotcha's", grabbing and tearing their feathers. " Also mentioned is,
"... vanes are pretty much indestructible." Everyone I know who
gets 1 tear in their vane from "the woods" or a"point", puts the arrow
aside and replaces that vane in the next few days. The nice thing
about feathers, with the same 'tear', tear it off & just keep on
shooting. I have used the bottom feather, photo above, to shoot the
below target at 20 yards with fingers (296/300 21x score). (I always
shoot 10 arrows to warm up - This day my sights were actually about
an 1 inch to 1 1/2 inch high, but left them as is. For some reason they
shot high inside, but spot-on outside)
The bottom feathers above had been on my arrow for seven years
before they were replaced. Feathers are not a money maker for the
Pro Shop, but in my opinion, they are a great friend to the
Archer/Hunter.

How Quiet does my bow have to be?
Q - Deer hear the bowstring vibration and "jump" the arrow - or - Deer can hear the arrow coming? Which is right?
A - A bow generates about 75 decibels when shot. Because of the Inverse Square Law, bow noise dissipates quickly.
At 6 yrds the noise at a dears ear will approach 56 dbl, loud enough to startle the animal. At 25 yrds the bows sound
is 44 db. not enough to spook the animal.
However, the noise of the arrow gets louder as the arrow approaches. Vane flutter and air
rushing thru the broadhead vents can create noise levels of 85 db, which can make the
animal "jump".
**This information comes from Todd Kuhn, Bowhunting Editor, in the Dec /Jan 2006 issue.**
Does Archery require any exercise?
Not in the way you might be thinking, but it would be a good idea as you will use those muscles that generally
don't get any. If you decide to, just keep in mind not to start with too heavy a weight; the idea is to work the
muscles and strengthen them, not to become buff. SO, let's get started...
3D tournaments start in early January and end usually in September, they start outdoors in May. They usually
take a jaunt of 2-3 hours and can include getting a slight workout if you are not fit; so if your not able to take the
walk without a lot of heart pounding and sweat, I would start a walking regiment of some sort that includes hills.
Swimming and cycling are also two very good conditioners. Again, keep in mind that the goal here is to be
physically fit, not for you to get buffed.
Some basic lite exercises:
Interlock your fingers together and slowly lift them above your head, Interlock your fingers together and slowly
move them from side to side.
Using a piece of Rubber Exercise tubing, outstretch your hands from side to side. now lightly use
an up and down rocking motion.
Now hold the same tuning in your hands, with the tubing behind your back, lightly stretch your
hands out in front of you.
Now keep some tubing tied together. Use this as if you were drawing your bow.
A few more specific exercises:
1. Rhomboids, Biceps and your Latissimus Dorsi (Back Muscles)
Chin/Pull Ups--> With your arms apart and your palms facing you, touch the back of your neck.
2. Trapezius, Rhomboids and Deltoids
In front of your chest, pull apart a piece of Physical Therapist Rubber Tubing.
3. Tricep
Basic pull up - Do half without going 1/4 the way down.
Using weights light weights can help, but not needed unless you need the 'extra' conditioning and strength.
Finding someone who deals with weights on a regular basis is a big plus. If using a gym, make sure they
understand the muscle groups you are trying to work on and why. If they understand the concept of using a
bow ,this will be a big help to you. Some gym exercises that could also help - Lateral Raise, Forward Raise,
Overhead Raise, Backward Raise, Bent-Over Lateral Raise and Forward Rowing.
Remember, everything starts in moderation... Don't over do it!
Being in shape will improve your accuracy! Good Luck!
Which animal, besides 'man', kills more than humans?
Bears? Alligators? Cougars? Lions? Try White-Tail Deer!
According to the Insurance Information Institute study , more than 1.5 million deer/car collisions
take place in the USA each year, killing more than 150 occupants and causing more than 1 billion
in vehicle damage.
For 2005 - 2006, the top states for Bambi and Buck encounters were the top were Pennsylvania,
Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Georgia, Virginia, Minnesota, Texas, Indiana and South Carolina.
How many deer have you seen commit "vehicular suicide"? Hunting pressure, not even the'
regular' hunting season plays a part, city development and the search for food are the major
causes, he Rut probably is the bigger contributor. As man has need for more space, the more
likely this is to occur, hunting is the only option that has a chance of keeping this to a minimum.
Hunters save lives by "culling the herd" as it were. Without hunters, more collisions would occur,
causing more property damage and higher auto insurance rates for all of us with unnecessary
injuries and deaths.
Thank a Deer Hunter, the life he or she saves could be your own!
Anti Second Amendment Quotes
F.A.Q.'s
The First thing that must be said is, Poachers ARE NOT Hunters.
The media likes to publicize story's about a how a 'hunter' poached a
deer or other animal. The reality is that poaching is not the work of a
Hunter, but the work of a poacher, in other wards, a criminal!
Hunters are responsible for around 95% of the calls to their State
DNR TIP's line, known as "Turn in Poachers". Hunters are the one's
who turn in these criminal poachers! These criminals are
responsible for stealing hundreds to thousands of dollars from the
State; from the people.
The anti hunting crowd knows this to be true, but loves to manipulate
the story to suit their purpose, which is to end ALL hunting and
fishing! Groups like PETA would even end your relationship with
your pet cat or dog or blind eye seeing dog.
PETA literally kills 72% to 97% of the "companion" animals they take in,
depending on which year you look at. The HSUS (Humane Society of
the US), would also end all hunting and fishing as we know it; they
could put their money to a much better purpose, like supporting your
local Humane Society, but they stopped that funding over 20 years
ago.
The truth is that hunters oppose poachers by supporting their
license revocations, stiff fines and the confiscation of their personal
property they used to 'get to and find' the animal, shoot the animal
and store the animal. On top of this, Bowhunter Magazine publishes
their names and violations to further show that we will not stand for
it.
I just wish ALL hunting and fishing magazines, in print or online,
would do the same!
Why Do Hunters Poach Deer?
ISHI - The 'start' of Archery n the U.S.A.
”Ishi” – Named by Pr. Kroeber of the University of Cal., Ishi walked
out of the wild in Oroville, CA., on Aug. 29, 1911. He is considered to
be the last known survivor of the Yahi tribal group, the 'Last' known
person of the Stone Age. Ishi taught Dr. Saxton Pope how to make
arrows and bows, who in turn taught Arthur Young; Dr. Pope not
long after started to make 'movies' about his hunting adventures.
Bringing the hunt to the masses to be seen on the big screen. If I
remember right, the last time I saw a hunting adventure on the big
screen was in Sioux Falls, SD., in the middle '70's
Compound Bows: The beginning
In the 1950’s Dick Hamilton ‘designed’ his concept of the compound
bow on a napkin; but eventually dismissed it as being not true to
the 'sport' of the Longbow & Recurve.
In June 1966, Holless Wilbur Allen patented his idea of the
compound bow and sent Tom Jennings an early prototype. They
became the first to manufacture the compound bow.
Holless' idea was to use two tear style 'wheels', but it did not
working as he intended, instead he came up with a 6 'wheel'
compound bow with 50% let-off.
The first 3 bows were called the Brown Hunter, Black hunter and the
Speedster; the Black Hunter being the hardest to find. I know, I
have the other two.
If you have a question not answered in this section or on the front page, please
let me know and I'll answer it by email; I may also post it here in the F.A.Q. section.
F.A.Q.'s
The Mind in the Shot?
If you are able to fully exercise your skill in practice, unexpected results can frequently occur at some
important event (such as a competition). This is because the mind, being swayed by negative attitudes such
as attachment and desire, becomes agitated, making it impossible to put forth all of your skill and technique.
In short, you are defeated by the working of your mind and spirit.
Archers sometimes lose their composure. At important events, you can be affected by the atmosphere of
the event. As the strong internal and external stimulation causes increasing excitement, both your mind
and body become abnormally tense; the technique which you can normally perform smoothly and without
thinking loses its cohesiveness, continuity, and sustainability; your body and mind become rigid; and you are
seized by uncertainty and become unable to control your own mind. In short, you lose your self-control. No
matter how strong and skillful you are, you cannot fully exercise your ability if this strength and skill is not
accompanied by the proper working of the mind and spirit. Consequently, in order to improve your skill, you
must strive to fulfill the following three conditions:
• Maintain good health
• Continually practice your technique
• Strive to increase your mental power and learn spiritual calmness by training the mind and spirit.
*Since the one thing that will honestly show the true state of your mind is your reaction to the target, you
must continuously shoot at the target in order to develop the proper working of the mind and spirit. This
process will increase your mental power and teach you spiritual calmness.
The target and the mind have a relationship similar to that of a catalyst and that which it catalyzes. When a
catalyst is introduced into a seemingly stable chemical solution, for instance, a violent reaction will occur if
there is anything in the solution that is receptive to the catalyst. In the same way, the target, taken by itself,
is meaningless, and your mind, not affected by thoughts of the target, can remain calm. When the target and
your mind are joined through the act of shooting, however, the target suddenly assumes overpowering
importance. You see it as an object that must be pierced with the arrow. It is the goal, the objective, the
physical representation of all your hopes and fears. Hitting it means success and missing it… failure.
Everyone reacts to it in a different way, based upon what it represents to them.
Therefore, it is of the utmost importance for you to face the target and, through shooting, to learn to deal
with the emotions it engenders. You cannot lie to yourself about how you feel about the target, for the
shooting does not lie. It will be obvious for everyone to see. An honest archer, therefore, does not shy
away from this confrontation, for this confrontation, more than anything else, holds the key to understanding
the essence of a quality shot.
Good advice - unsure of who this comes from
Finger Shooters Draw Length, or pretty close to it any way.
How to Measure Your Draw Length
Draw Length can be determined by a measurement known as 'wingspan.' This is simply a
measurement and has nothing to do with how you actually draw back your bow.
How to measure your wingspan:
1) Lean against a wall, standing as close to the wall as possible with your back
flat.
2) Extend your arms and fingers out as far as possible.
3) Have someone make a pencil mark at the end of both your fingers tips
4) Measure this distance
This is your wingspan. *Find this number in the chart below to find its matching
Draw Length.
(For example, a wingspan of 67" would be a draw length of 26")
Wingspan Draw Length
(Inches) (inches)
69 27
70 27 1/2
71 28
72 28 1/2
73 29
74 29 1/2
75 30
76 30 1/2
* The Most Common Draw Length is around 28 inches.
** Fine tune from here. Your draw length must be comfortable and smooth.

Kinetic Energy - How is it figured?
Kinetic Energy is the amount of foot pounds that your arrow and bow are generating.
The formula for figuring Kinetic Energy -
Velocity X's 2, divided by 450250, X's the grain weight of the arrow will equal the Kinetic Energy
in Foot Pounds.
For Example...an IBO Rating of 318 fps -
318 x 318 = 101124 divided by 450250 = 0.2245 x 350 = 78.60 Foot Pounds of Kinetic Energy

Build your own bag target stand.
I've had this idea for awhile now, but leave it to Field & Stream (Sept. '11 issue), to put it into print.
This style will keep your bag from killing the grass, rotting your target as well as keeping the rain off.
Read all the way through so you know what you'll need.
Support Post:
Cut a 10 foot 4 x 4 in half. Determine where you want your stand & use a post hole digger or Auger to make
two 1 - 2 foot deep holes 38 inches a part on center. Add concrete to the holes, then set each 4 x 4 up
vertically. As you backfill, lay a string flat on the face of both post to make sure they are squared to each other,
& use a carpenter's level to make sure they are perfectly
vertical.
Make the Roof Trusses:
Once the concrete dries, center a 28 inch long 2 x 4 to the very top outside edge of each 4 x 4. Nail or screw in
place, I prefer to screw them in place. Make 45 degree miter cuts at both ends of two 16 inch 2 x 4's. Fasten
them together at the top & to one of the 28 inch bases to create a small truss. Repeat on the other side.
Sheath & Shingle the Roof:
Use two 40 inch long 2 x 4's to connect the two trusses at the base, fore & aft. Make the roof by sheathing the
framework with two sheets of plywood, cut to fit. Then lay & nail down the shingles. You won't need a lot unless
your going to build enough for a 20, 30, 40 & 50 yard range, but check the garage and basement, who knows what
you have laying around. If you don't have any, check your local home-repair stores for open packs.
Hang your Target:
Now screw two eye bolts high enough on the 4 x 4's to allow your bag target (attached with rope via its grommet
hole), to swing freely off the ground. Put a coat or two of stain on all of the wood to guard against the elements,
& your work is complete. Now let everything dry, then shoot to your hearts content.

It will be somewhere along their travel route, places that Does congregate. Keep in mind, Buck trails are about 15 to 20 yards off of
